Q: |
What do I need to know before starting a new tile job? |
| |
A: |
Any tile installation, no matter how small an area, should be thoroughly discussed with the contractor or installer hired for the job so that the scope of the work and the responsibilities of each party are fully understood. Possible questions may be: Who will remove the old flooring material if necessary? If the installation is to use a thick-bed method, what provisions will be made for the added thickness at doorsills or at the entrance to the next room? If the installation is to be thin-set, what steps will be taken to compensate for the possible flexibility of the existing surface? If traffic must be avoided following tiling, what temporary measures will be provided for necessary passage? Professional installers will perform their task neatly and efficiently. |

Q: |
How stain resistant are the different types of carpet? |
| |
A: |
No carpet is 100% soil or stain proof…. Synthetic carpet fibres are more naturally stain or soil resistant than natural fibres, such as wool. A carpet made with olefin fibre (polypropylene) resists moisture and therefore has excellent inherent stain resistance. Polyester and nylon fibre carpets resist many water-soluble stains. Most carpet today has been treated with a stain-resist and/or soil repel treatment, so many spills can be removed if immediate action is taken. Look for labels such as DuPont Stainmaster®, 3M Scotchguard™, or UltraGuard™, on Your HomeStyle carpet, which guarantee special soil and/or stain resistant protection features. To maintain the appearance and extend the life of your investment, professional cleaning of your carpet should be scheduled approximately once every two years. |

Q: |
Can carpet affect a person’s health? |
| |
A: |
Carpet in your home offers many features and benefits to your comfort, health and well-being. Carpet is the only floor covering choice that provides natural, optimum noise and home heating insulation. Carpet provides a firmer footing to maintain balance, minimizes the danger of slips and falls, lessens back pain, and leg fatigue. The carpet industry has worked closely with academic institutions, the government, and laboratories to evaluate carpet's role in the indoor environment. No evidence has indicated any adverse human health effects to volatile organic compounds (VOCS) from carpet. Scientists have shown that carpet can be very beneficial in trapping and holding dust particles and other allergy causing elements preventing them from continually being blown around the airborne room. Proper, regular vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning is necessary to remove all elements. |

Q: |
What is the odour present in a new carpet installation? |
| |
A: |
The "new carpet smell" comes from a by-product called 4-phenylcyclohexene otherwise known as 4-PC, which is from the latex binder that holds the fibbers and backing together. The odour is in no way harmful and will disappear within 48-72 hours after installation, as with any new product. If you are sensitive to odors, ventilation of the area will speed up the dissipation. |

Q: |
Is a Cork floor water repellent? |
| |
A: |
TORLYS Uniclic Cork floors are water-resistant, but not waterproof or flood-proof. If you spill water on your Cork floor don’t let it sit for an extended period. As long as you wipe up spills right away, your floor isn’t going to be damaged. If you’re going to install Cork in your bathroom, you’ll need to apply a coat of TORLYS Sealer, to protect the joints from moisture. |
